Gyeongju Travel Guide 2026: Bulguksa, Royal Tombs & Wolji Pond by KTX
Gyeongju is the open-air museum of Korea — the thousand-year capital of the Silla kingdom, where grass-covered royal tombs sit in the middle of town and an 8th-century temple climbs a hillside above the sea. With autumn colors peaking across the country, mid-October is one of the best times to visit. Here's how to get there, what to see, and how to plan it as a day trip or an overnight.
Getting to Gyeongju by KTX
Gyeongju's bullet-train stop was renamed from Singyeongju to Gyeongju Station in late 2023, so search for "Gyeongju" when you book. The old downtown station closed years ago, and the KTX station sits about 12 km outside the center.
| From | KTX time | Approx. one-way fare |
|---|---|---|
| Seoul | ~2 h – 2 h 15 m | ~₩44,200 standard (roughly US$32) |
| Busan | ~30 min | short-hop fare, ~19 trains/day |
KTX fares are fixed, so booking early secures a seat, not a discount. First train from Seoul is around 5:15 AM, with 17+ departures a day. Reserve via the KorailTalk app or at the station.
Getting around once you arrive
From the KTX station it's about 12 km into the historic center. Your options:
| Option | Details |
|---|---|
| Taxi | ~15–20 min to downtown, roughly ₩15,000–20,000; call via the Kakao T app |
| Bus 700 | Station → downtown → Bulguksa (~55 min end to end); pay with T-money; infrequent |
| City buses 60/61 | Serve the tomb & observatory area, ~₩1,500 |
| Bike | Central Gyeongju is flat & compact; rentals from around ₩1,000/day at some shops |
Carry a T-money card for buses; buses can be sparse, so taxis (via Kakao T) are often the easier choice for connecting between sights, especially out to Bulguksa.
The must-see sights
Bulguksa Temple & Seokguram Grotto (free)
The UNESCO-listed Bulguksa is an 8th-century masterpiece of terraced stone staircases and twin pagodas — allow a good half-day with the grotto. Above it on the mountain sits Seokguram, a serene granite Buddha in a domed stone chamber. Both are now free to enter (admission was abolished nationwide for state-designated heritage sites). Hours are roughly 9:00–18:30, last entry around 17:30. Bus 12 connects the temple to the grotto.
Daereungwon Royal Tombs & Cheomseongdae
Daereungwon is a park of grassy royal burial mounds right in the city; inside, the Cheonmachong tomb is opened up so you can see its chamber and a replica of its famous painted saddle flap. Admission is modest (about ₩3,000). A short walk away stands Cheomseongdae, a 7th-century stone astronomical observatory — one of Asia's oldest — free to view and especially pretty when lit at night (open until about 22:00).
Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond (after dark)
Gyeongju's signature night view: a reconstructed Silla pleasure garden where floodlit pavilions mirror in a still pond. Admission is about ₩3,000, and it stays open late (roughly to 22:00, last entry ~21:30), so time your visit for sunset and the switch-on of the lights. The nearby Woljeonggyo Bridge, a reconstructed covered wooden footbridge, is also beautifully floodlit.
Hwangnidan-gil & local food
For a break, Hwangnidan-gil is a lane of cafés and boutiques in restored hanok houses near the tombs — the trendy heart of modern Gyeongju. Don't leave without trying Hwangnam-ppang (a thin red-bean bun baked here since 1939) and a ssambap set meal (grilled meat or fish with leafy wraps and a spread of side dishes), best near Daereungwon.
A one-day sample itinerary
- ~6:00 AM — Early KTX from Seoul Station
- ~8:15 AM — Arrive, taxi downtown
- Morning — Daereungwon tombs → Cheomseongdae → coffee on Hwangnidan-gil
- Lunch — Ssambap near the tombs
- Early afternoon — Bus 700 or taxi to Bulguksa, then Seokguram
- From ~6:30 PM — Donggung Palace, Wolji Pond & Woljeonggyo Bridge after dark
- Evening — Late KTX back to Seoul
It's a full day: round-trip rail alone is 4–4.5 hours and the illuminated pond — the highlight — lands right when you need to head back. If you can, stay overnight to enjoy it unhurried and fit in more of the city.
Frequently asked questions
Can you do Gyeongju as a day trip from Seoul?
Yes, but it's a long day — about 4–4.5 hours of KTX round-trip plus travel within the city. It works if you start early and prioritize a few sights. With the night view of Wolji Pond as the climax, many visitors find an overnight stay more relaxing and rewarding.
Is Bulguksa Temple free to enter in 2026?
Yes. Admission to Bulguksa and Seokguram Grotto was abolished along with other state-designated heritage sites, so entry is free. You may still pay for parking or the connecting shuttle/bus. Hours are roughly 9:00–18:30.
Which KTX station do I book for Gyeongju?
Book Gyeongju Station — it was called Singyeongju until late 2023. It's about 12 km from the historic center, so plan a taxi (~₩15,000–20,000) or bus into town after you arrive.
What's the best time of year to visit Gyeongju?
Spring (cherry blossoms, late March–April) and autumn (foliage, late October–November) are the most scenic. In mid-October the weather is mild and fall colors are arriving — ideal for walking the tomb parks and temple grounds.
