This 2026 guide covers KTX fares, travel times, how to book as a foreigner, and the brand-new 60-day advance booking window that just took effect. Everything you need to ride Korea’s high-speed rail with confidence.
KTX Seoul to Busan: fares & travel time
The flagship KTX route runs Seoul Station → Busan Station, the length of the country, in roughly 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes depending on the number of stops. Prices vary by seat class, time of day and how early you book.
| Train / Class | One-way fare (approx.) | Travel time |
|---|---|---|
| KTX Economy | from ~59,800 KRW (roughly $43) | ~2h 15m–2h 30m |
| KTX First Class | from ~83,700 KRW (roughly $60) | ~2h 15m–2h 30m |
| SRT (alternative) | from ~52,000 KRW (roughly $37) | ~2h 20m |
USD figures are approximate and vary with the exchange rate.
KTX vs SRT: what’s the difference?
Many travelers do not realize Korea has two high-speed operators on the Seoul–Busan corridor. KTX is run by KORAIL and departs from Seoul Station — the most central and tourist-friendly choice. SRT is a slightly cheaper competitor that mostly departs from Suseo Station in the Gangnam area (a limited Seoul Station–Busan pilot began February 25, 2026, so always check the departure station and train number when you book). If your hotel is near Seoul Station or you want the simplest option, choose KTX; if you are staying in Gangnam, SRT from Suseo can be more convenient and a little cheaper.
New for 2026: book up to 60 days ahead
Here is the big update. From October 1, 2026, KORAIL doubled the advance booking window for KTX and other KORAIL rail from 30 days to 60 days before departure. The change was announced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) and KORAIL on September 20, 2026.
Why it matters for you: foreign rail ridership jumped to 6.69 million passengers from January to August 2026 — up 68% year-on-year — and international travelers usually lock in flights two months or more ahead. Now you can reserve your KTX seat to match. Fares, seat inventory and refund rules were not changed by this update. Popular weekends and holidays still sell out, so earlier is better.
How to book KTX tickets as a foreigner
| Option | How it works |
|---|---|
| Official KORAIL site (English) | letskorail.com has an English version — the cheapest, most reliable source. Pay by card and show the e-ticket on your phone. |
| KorailTalk app | KORAIL’s official mobile app for booking and mobile tickets on the go. |
| Station counter / kiosk | Buy in person at Seoul Station; staff can assist and kiosks have English menus. |
| Korea Rail Pass (KR Pass) | A tourist-only pass for unlimited rides over set days — worth it if you plan several long trips. |
Important: Book under the exact name on your passport, and carry your passport to board. Avoid unofficial resellers — they often add markups and can complicate refunds. Stick to the official KORAIL/SRT channels.
Boarding tips for a smooth ride
Arrive 15–20 minutes early, find your platform on the departure board, and match your car and seat number printed on the ticket. There are no airport-style security lines — you walk straight to the platform. Seats recline, there is free Wi-Fi and power outlets, and a snack cart passes through. Sit on the correct side and you may catch rice paddies, rivers and mountains flying past at up to 300 km/h.
